The cemetery is situated on the right bank of Selenga river, 0,5 km from Fofonovo village (Kabanskiy district, Buryatia), on the slopes of Fofonovskaya mountain.
Fofonovo cemetery is one of the largest and most ancient burial complexes of the Baikal region. It includes three multi-time groups of burials (Neolithic, Bronze Age).
The site was discovered in 1926 by Okladnikov A. The ecavations were held by Gerasimov M. in 1936 and 1959; Okladnikov A. in 1948 and 1950; Konev V. in 1987-1991 and 1996. Nowadays the excavation have been holding under the direction of Zhambaltarova E. (since 2007).
